But if my business consists of services primarily provided in a customer’s home (and I don’t have an office yet) can it still be listed? Without an address?

There’s a new feature in Google Places for businesses that allows you to list a "service area." When you do this you can also exclude your address.

Not showing your address seems to lead to lower rankings, so I would definitely add it if you get an office sometime down the line, but this will at least get you listed for now.

Hey Lauryn, for starters, you can send out a "Grand Opening" email to all your contacts so they’re aware of your business and start getting your flyers and any other marketing materials distributed throughout your local community. Below is a list of places to get you started. The key is to be consistent in getting as much information out there as you can so make sure you have your marketing materials with you whereever you go leaving a "paper trail" behind. Once you start building up a clientele, you’ll be able to work on referrals as well.

Congratulations on your decision to start up a new small business! First and foremost, I’d say to pick a business you are interested in so that you will enjoy your time building and running it. No specific classes are required (although a knowledge of accounting, marketing, and the internet would help). Depending upon the type of business you chose to start up, there are small business grants available, and of course financial institutions, and even friends and family.

Regarding your question on hepful start-up sites, I’ve placed a link to the Microsoft Small Business Center. Under the learning tab, there is some great information on how to start-up a new business, approaching clients, writing a business plan, obtaining a website and many other things you’ll need to know. There’s even a step by step checklist of everything you’ll need to do and think about. It’s free and no registration is required.
